the sad resolution of what amounted to a right wing witch hunt against ambassador susan rice. i think, first of all, wrongly laying responsibility for the fiasco at her feet. secondly, when facts subsequently came out to suggest that she was marrily repeated what she had been told in terms of intelligence, they were still unrelenting, and then thirdly what this does is displace a highly qualified person for secretary of state from the obama administration who happens to be a person of color and a woman. a rhodes scholar, a doctoral recipient from oxford university, an extraordinary broad career at the state department so to speak in terms of foreign relations and the like. this is a sad day in american politics. she didn't get a hearing. she was vetted informally and, therefore, rejected outside of the parameters of legal and formal power, and as a rul of that, i think this is a witch hunt in the worst fashion that it could ever be. >> before we talk to jonathan alter and ari melber, let's bring in chuck todd who is at the white house. chuck, has there been some reaction from the pres

today i spoke to ambassador susan rice and accepted her decision to remove her name from consideration for secretary of state. while i deeply regret the unfair and misleading attacks on susan rice in recent weeks, her decision demonstrates the strength of her character and an admirable commitment to rise above the politics of the moment to put our national interests first. the american people can be proud to have a public servant of her caliber and character representing our country. wolf, as you know, susan rice has been caught up in this drama over the benghazi conflict and the deaths of americans in the assault on the u.s. consulate there. while susan rice was not responsible for security of the consulate, she did go on sunday shows and talk about the u.s. response there and she has been accused of deliberately mischaracterizing what happened. all sides -- or the white house has adamantly insisted and she has insisted that she in no way deliberately mischaracterized what happened. she was reading from unclassified talking points and nonetheless this has been caught up

there was another part of this administration, people here in this west wing. susan rice is somebody they know very well. they're very loyal to her. this is somebody who has worked her way up through the diplomatic ranks in a way that's different from john kerry. john kerry worked his way up to the political ranks. susan rice has done every job you need to have done in unelected politics, if you will, to be qualified, to have the resume, to have the experience to be secretary of state. and, by the way, don't forget there was also the fact that kerry and rice in some ways some could argue see the world a little bit differently. susan rice is somebody a little more of an interventionist. wants to get involved. look at libya. she was somebody that was strongly there. john kerry is somebody who has seen war firsthand and is somebody who is very much hesitant as an interventionist when it comes to things. voted against things. so there was a lot here i think that was more than just am i going to do something with my friend or do something to reward the party. more complicated than that. >

chris, about the cabinet decisions. we're told the president's still not decided about susan rice versus john kerry, and now there are a number of other players because this is a domino bit of business, where if susan rice goes to the senate department instead of john kerry, it would mean that someone else, probably tom donna lin will remain as chief of -- as national security adviser. it would open up the u.n. ambassador's job for samantha power. look at some of the players in play here. you have a team being weighed and balanced. susan, what are you hearing as to which way the president might go? >> you know, i think that you would have to talk -- the true answer is i don't know which way the president is going to go. i think he's in a box. he's gotten himself in a pickle here. it seems clear his preference is susan rice for state and that's buying an argument he knows that's buying a fight with the senate for confirmation. if he goes with her he's going to spend political capital there. if he doesn't go for her now, does it indicate he's backing off in the face of opposition which mig
